Melamine resin (melamine-formaldehyde resin), is a polymer obtained by the reaction of melamine and formaldehyde. The English abbreviation is MF.

The cross-linking reaction occurs during processing and the product is an infusible thermosetting resin. It is often referred to as amino resin together with urea-formaldehyde resin.

1. Melamine resin is added with inorganic filler to make molded products with rich colors, mostly used for decorative boards, tableware and daily necessities. The tableware looks like porcelain or ivory, not easy to be brittle and suitable for machine washing.

2. Melamine resin and urea-formaldehyde resin can be mixed into adhesives, which are used to make laminates. Melamine resin modified with butanol can be used as coating and thermosetting paint.

Urea resin is also called urea-formaldehyde resin. The English abbreviation is UF.

It is the initial polycondensation of urea and formaldehyde under the action of a catalyst (alkaline or acid catalyst) to form an initial urea-formaldehyde resin, and then under the action of a curing agent or auxiliary agent, an insoluble and insoluble final thermosetting resin is formed.

Urea-formaldehyde is easy to decompose in case of strong acid and strong alkali, and has poor weather resistance, poor initial adhesion, large shrinkage, high brittleness, water resistance, and easy aging. The wood-based panels produced with urea-formaldehyde resin have formaldehyde release problem during the manufacturing and use process, so it must be modified.
