Can Melamine Tableware be Microwaved? From Huafu Chemicals Sharing

Today, Huafu will share with you some professional experimental data on the impact of formaldehyde migration in high-temperature melamine tableware.

Experimental Method: 3% acetic acid solution was selected as the soaking solution, and soaked at different temperatures for 0.5 hour, 2 hours. The effects of different soaking temperatures on the migration of formaldehyde were analyzed. The results are shown in the table below.

From the above table, we could see that the soaking temperature has a great influence on the migration of formaldehyde in tableware.

Under cold storage conditions, the three types of tableware are basically free of formaldehyde monomer migration.

* At 40℃, the migration of formaldehyde from the three types of tableware is less than 5 mg/kg, and the regulated limit in the EU is 15 mg/kg. As the immersion temperature continues to increase, the migration of formaldehyde becomes larger and larger.

* When urea-formaldehyde resin tableware is used under the temperature condition of 80℃ and above, the migration of formaldehyde greatly exceeds the prescribed limit. As the immersion temperature increases, the amount of migration increases dramatically.

* When the melamine resin tableware's soaking temperature is higher than 80℃, the migration amount of formaldehyde shows a sudden increase, reaching the maximum at 100℃.

1) For melamine resin, although the production process is an irreversible reaction process, a certain amount of free formaldehyde will be generated during the addition reaction, and at the same time, due to the curing time, pressure, temperature, polishing and grinding process during the molding process, etc.

With the increase of the soaking temperature, the residual free formaldehyde increases the activation energy, and the amount of migration into the immersion liquid of similar polarity increases; while at low temperature, the activation energy of free formaldehyde is low, and the migration amount is small or not.

2) For urea-formaldehyde resin cutlery and mixed resin cutlery, in addition to the above reasons, their weather resistance is relatively poor, and they will decompose at high temperatures. As the immersion temperature increases, the dissociation degree increases, the surface density decreases, and the gloss decreases. Under the microscope, uneven pores will be seen. The formaldehyde inside the product will overflow as the immersion temperature increases, resulting in an acidic aqueous solution. The concentration of formaldehyde in the medium increases.

Therefore, melamine tableware shouldn't be used in the microwave. We could use an ozone disinfection cabinet or disinfection liquid to avoid high-temperature disinfection. When using boiling water for disinfection, the time generally does not exceed 10 minutes.
